Lady Vikes knock out Honey Bees

A reasonable solution to the scheduling woes for Warren Central and Vicksburg’s softball teams was nixed by an administrator in Greenville Thursday afternoon.
Instead of letting visiting Greenville-Weston play both Vicksburg teams at Warren Central on Thursday to save travel time and expenses, the Honey Bees played only one game. That might have been a good thing, considering how badly Greenville-Weston played.
The Lady Vikes batted around three times in the first inning and scored 19 runs. They went on to post a 26-0 rout to ease into first place in Division 4-6A by a half-game over Vicksburg.
Greenville-Weston, winless in the division at 0-3, committed 11 errors in just two innings that the Lady Vikes (5-10, 2-0) batted. Even simple routine plays got booted by the Honey Bees.
The Lady Vikes did their part by putting the ball in play. They had 15 hits and everyone on the roster got a hand in the action.
As for the playoff race, two makeup games with Vicksburg will decide the division title and more importantly, a home playoff game in the Class 6A playoffs. The regular season ends April 21.
“We had it set up where Vicksburg was coming here to play Greenville at 4 and then we would play Greenville afterwards, well the assistant superintendant at Greenville nixed that,” Warren Central coach Dana McGivney. “We were on the phone all day trying to save it. We wanted to play Vicksburg on Tuesday and Thursday to finish off division play. Instead, we’ll play Vicksburg here on Tuesday and then me and Amanda (Yocum) will decide when to play their home game.”
Vicksburg (6-7, 1-0) will now have to travel to Greenville Thursday and then fit Warren Central in during the final week. A regularly scheduled home game with Cathedral was scrapped in order to set up the doubleheader at WC.
As for Thursday’s game, McGivney said her team made contact at the plate.
“We hit the ball today,” she said. “We didn’t hit the ball as well up there even though we did 10-run rule them.”
MacKenzie Page made out well by coming off the bench for a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Katie Busby had three bunt hits in the first inning and scored four runs.
