GREENWOOD — Janie Harris Carre’ Dale died peacefully at her home in Greenwood on Friday, April 6, 2012. She was 93.

Born in New Orleans on Oct. 10, 1918, Mrs. Dale was the daughter of the late Tudor Beach and Janie Harris Carre’.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Stansbury “Stanny” Sanders; her husband, Madison Sylvester Dale Sr.; a daughter Margaret Viola “Peggy” Sanders Sparkman; and a sister, Margaret Carre’.

Mrs. Dale graduated from Sophie Wright High School in New Orleans and attended Sophie Newcomb College, where she was a member of the glee club and affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She completed business school and during World War II was secretary to the commanding officer of the 5th Naval District in New Orleans.

Mrs. Dale spent her early married life in Indianola, and in 1957, the family made Greenwood their home. She enjoyed participating in numerous civic and social organizations and clubs, but her greatest love and service was for the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood.

At age 92, Mrs. Dale and her cousin, Beach Carre’, published a book, “Yours Very Truly,” a collection of letters written by her father and her father’s three brothers during the Depression.

Janie, Mother, ‘Nanna’ Dale relished loving and being loved by five generations of family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Penny Sanders Varner (Mack) of Vicksburg and Mary Sanders Hughes (Bobby) of St. Louis, Mo.; her Dale sons, Matt Dale Jr., Jimmy Dale of Jackson and Danny Dale (Charlotte), all of Glendora.

Mrs. Dale also is survived by her seven Sanders granddaughters, Betsy Varner McIntire (Troy) of Hattiesburg, Emily Varner Shelton (David) of Oxford, Mary Margaret Sparkman (Jay Fraiser) of Atlanta, Sally Sparkman Rabinowitz (Jason) and Janie Sparkman of Pensacola, Fla., Margo Hughes and Julie Hughes of St. Louis; and six Dale grandchildren, Ellen O’Neal (Kenny) and Kathryn Roland (Sessions), all of Madison, Mary Dabney Goldbeck (Mark) of Louisville, James Dale of Starkville, Daniel Dale of Glendora and Wood Dale of Oxford; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Capt. Viola Brown Sanders of Greenwood.

The family wishes to thank Louise McClendon for her loyal loving care of Mrs. Dale.

Services for Mrs. Dale will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2012, at First United Methodist Church with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. in the Russell Annex before the service. The Rev. Glenn Seefeld will officiate. Wilson & Knight Funeral Home of Greenwood is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be sons, Matt Dale Jr., Jimmy Dale, Danny Dale, son-in-law Bobby Hughe, and grandsons Daniel Dale, Wood Dale and James Dale.

Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Amelung, Billy Cook, Dr. Henry Flautt Jr., Loys Gray, Danny Hardin, Jimmy Hughes Sr., Billy Leflore, W.G. Mize, Ralph Neely, Ricki Roberston and Melvin Self.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Greenwood, P.O. Box 1870, Greenwood, MS 38930.
