A Vicksburg man accused of firing a weapon into the ceiling of the Vicksburg Convention Center during a public event early Sunday was in the Warren County Jail this morning, Vicksburg police said today in releasing the report three days after the shooting.
Everett Defrance, 22, 227 High Hill Drive, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted aggravated assault and shooting into a business, police Capt. Bobby Stewart said.
Three others were arrested after the outbreak at the convention center, believed to be the first in the history of the facility, which was opened by the city on Mulberry Street in 1997.
Defrance was being held on a $325,000 bond and was housed at police headquarters until about 4:30 p.m. Monday, when he was transferred to the jail.
He is accused of attempting to shoot at a man with whom he was fighting inside the convention center, Stewart said. The bullet struck the ceiling and no one was injured, Stewart said.
The shooting was reported at 2:13 a.m. during a “Purple Party,” a public show for people 21 and older. According to the convention center’s website, the show cost $10 in advance and $20 at the door. The contact listed on the website, Geno, did not return calls this morning. A voicemail message belonging to the phone number associated with Geno said that presale tickets were sold out before the show.
The party had been scheduled to conclude at 2 a.m., according to the website.
Messages to Vicksburg Convention Center executive director Troy Thorn were not returned this morning, and other employees of the convention center declined to comment.
It was not known how many people were inside the center at the time of the shooting.
Defrance was arrested by Vicksburg officers who were doing a security walk-through of the event, Stewart said. Convention Center security also was at the event, he said.
The man with whom Defrance was fighting was arrested and charged with simple assault, and two other people were arrested for shooting into the air outside the convention center, Stewart said. Names of those suspects were not released because the offenses are misdemeanors.
Three handguns were confiscated following the fight, Stewart said.
Stewart said he was instructed by Chief Walter Armstrong not to release information about the shooting earlier because officers were still interviewing suspects.
