Sharkey man faces five years for deodorant, soap theft

A Sharkey County man accused of stealing soap and deodorant with a combined value of $6.75 could face up to five years in prison.

George Chaney, 51, 247 Worthington St., Rolling Fork, was indicted this week for third-offense shoplifting, according to indictments release Friday by the District Attorney’s office.

Trial is tentatively set for Aug. 6.

Chaney is accused of stealing a two-pack of Degree “Extreme Blast” scented deodorant and a three-pack of Irish Spring aloe soap labeled “for healthy feeling skin” from Dollar General, 2078 U.S. 61 North in Rolling Fork on Feb. 27, court documents show.

He was convicted of shoplifting in March 2010 and May 2011, according to court records. He was also convicted of armed robbery in Louisiana in 1990 and sentenced to six years in prison.

Two Dollar General employees saw Chaney put the personal hygiene items in his pants and leave the store without paying, according to Rolling Fork police reports.

Other Sharkey County indictments released by the DA’s office Friday were:

• Brian W. Bridges, 26, 103 Laurel St., Rolling Fork — possession of a controlled substance and possession of precursor chemicals, Dec. 9, 2010.

• Christopher Cooper, 29, 205 Sidney Alexander St., Rolling Fork — false pretense, Sept. 30.

• Benjamin Ingram, 23, 2904 South Main Extension, Greenville — burglary of a dwelling, Jan 9.

• Quincy Thomas, 32, Anguilla, — possession of a controlled substance and receiving stolen property, Dec. 14.

• Joe Warfield, 57, 96 Beal St., Rolling Fork, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Jan. 26.

In Warren County Circuit Court for the week ending Friday:

• Dewaynda Butler, 36, 207 Enchanted Drive, pleaded guilty to possession of less than .1 gram of cocaine and was sentenced by Judge M. James Chaney to Ninth Circuit Drug Court for a period not to exceed five years, a fine of $1,500 and $1,297.50 in court costs. Butler was indicted in October.

• William G. Hansford, 30, 3781 Mississippi 27, was found guilty of violating terms of his suspended sentence for driving under the influence, third offense, and was sentenced by Chaney to three years and 364 days in prison followed by three years probation and ordered to pay $1,207.50 in fines, fees and costs. He pleaded guilty to the DUI on Nov. 2, 2009.

• Jeremy Dwayne Johnson, 25, 35 Smith Road, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance by Judge Isadore Patrick and was sentenced to five years in prison followed by three years probation, a $5,000 fine, $3,674 restitution and $797.50 in costs. He was indicted in July.

• Kemrod Short Jr., 21, 1922 Sky Farm Ave., pleaded guilty to molestation and was sentenced by Chaney to five years probation, a $3,000 fine and $2,322.50 in costs. Short must also register as a sex offender. He was indicted in October.
