With people around the world marking the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic this weekend, Southern Miss’ pitching staff seemed to stage its own re-enactment of the famous sinking.

Central Florida roughed up six Southern Miss pitchers for 13 hits Sunday, and scored in double digits for the second straight game as it hammered the Golden Eagles 12-3 in the finale of a three-game series in Hattiesburg.

D.J. Hicks homered and scored three runs for Central Florida (20-8, 9-3 Conference USA), and Ryan Breen went 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs. The Knights, who were held scoreless in a 14-inning loss in the series opener Friday, scored 23 runs and had 27 hits in the last two games.

Southern Miss only used two pitchers Friday, then chewed through a dozen on Saturday and Sunday.

“Our theme on Saturday and Sunday was to play like we had something to prove. These guys responded the last two days and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” UCF coach Terry Rooney said.

Boomer Scarborough (1-1) started for Southern Miss (20-15, 4-5) on Sunday, but didn’t make it out of the fourth inning. He walked the first two batters in the fourth and balked in a run before Breen’s two-run triple gave UCF a 3-0 lead. The Knights added another run off reliever James McMahon before the inning was over, then scored twice in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth to blow the game open.

Hicks belted a two-run homer, his 10th of the season, in the seventh inning to give UCF a 12-2 lead. On the next pitch, USM pitcher Cody Livingston hit Chris Taladay and was ejected. The plunking followed a rough play at the plate that also raised tempers.

“For three innings we played good,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “But the game is not a three-inning game.”

Isaac Rodriguez had an RBI single for Southern Miss in the bottom of the fourth and finished 2-for-4. As a team, Southern Miss only had five hits. Ray Hanson (3-1) went 62⁄3 innings and allowed four hits while striking out five batters to get the win for UCF.

Tulane 9, UAB 3

Brandon Boudreaux and Jeremy Schaffer both homered, and scored six of Tulane’s nine runs, as the Green Wave (25-11, 5-4 C-USA) beat UAB (21-16, 4-8) and won the weekend series.

Boudreaux was 4-for-5 with a double, homer and four runs scored. Schaffer was 3-for-5 with a homer, double and two runs scored, and he also drove in three runs. Troy McCartney added a solo homer for Tulane.

Former Porters Chapel Academy star Michael Busby (2-2) started on the mound for UAB and took the loss. He gave up six runs on seven hits in 51⁄3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Rice 3, Marshall 1

Andrew Benak struck out nine batters in 61⁄3 shutout innings, and Rice (27-11, 9-3 C-USA) completed a three-game sweep of Marshall (13-22, 1-8).

J.T. Chargois pitched the last 22⁄3 innings for Rice to earn his seventh save. Jeremy Rathjen homered for the Owls, and Chase McDowell had three hits.

ECU 14, Memphis 7

Six of East Carolina’s 17 hits went for extra bases, and the Pirates (25-10-1, 8-3-1 C-USA) scored six runs in the sixth to blow the game open. John Wooten went 4-for-5 with a double, homer and five RBIs for East Carolina, and Corey Thompson and Zach Wright had three hits apiece.

T.J. Rich and Derrick Thomas drove in two runs apiece for Memphis (16-20, 6-6).

Texas Tech 10, Houston 9

Nick Hanslik scored the winning run on an infield hit by Barrett Barnes in the bottom of the 12th inning as Texas Tech beat Houston.

Casey Grayson hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning as Houston stormed back from a 9-1 deficit. A two-run triple by Codey Morehouse in the ninth tied the game at 9.

Hanslik was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Texas Tech.
