Warrants have been issued for two Vicksburg men accused of kidnapping a woman Thursday, and a third man has been arrested for being an accessory before the fact to kidnapping, Sheriff Martin Pace said this morning.
Robert Buck, 34, who gave his address as 302 Skyview Lane, and Peter Haggard, 42, 170 Curry St., are believed to have abducted Buck’s former girlfriend, a 37-year-old Vicksburg resident, from outside the Culkin Water District office at Sherman Avenue and Culkin Road around 12:45 p.m.
The woman, who was not injured, got away from the men a few minutes later on Old Jackson Road in a ravine near property belonging to the Vicksburg National Military Park, Pace said.
Corey Leon Patterson, 34, 801 First East St., a third man involved in the abduction, was in the Warren County Jail this morning with a hold placed on him for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Details of his MDOC hold were not available.
Buck’s warrant charges him with kidnapping and aggravated domestic assault, Pace said; Haggard’s with kidnapping.
Pace said multiple witnesses to the abduction called 911 Thursday afternoon.
Investigator Stacy Rollison said the woman told deputies she was driving a Chevrolet Impala and realized Patterson was following her in a brown Chevrolet pickup registered to Haggard. Seeking some security, the woman pulled into the parking lot of the water district and Patterson followed her.
“About that time, Robert Buck and Peter Haggard pulled in in a silver Buick,” Pace said. The victim, recognizing Buck, sprayed him with pepper spray attempting to fend off the attack, but “Haggard and Buck pulled her into the Buick and sped off on Culkin Road, headed South,” Pace said.
They then turned west onto Old Jackson Road toward the city. Witnesses saw them pull over next to VNMP land and Buck drag the victim out of the car and into the ravine, Pace said.
Haggard drove off, Pace said, and Buck, realizing he had been seen, ran off, leaving the victim.
Pace said a search ensued, with the assistance of Vicksburg police K-9 units and park rangers, but Buck was not found.
The victim was taken to River Region Medical Center where she was evaluated and released, he said.
Patterson was arrested around 6:15 p.m. at 20 Water Well Road, where the brown pickup, a 1994 Chevrolet, was recovered.
Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said in January after following a drive-by shooting at the Water Well home that left a 4-year-old boy injured that police had responded to more than 100 calls there since 1996, at what he called an “active residence” in Kings. Mary Ann Buck, the owner who has lived at the home since 1989, said in January that not all of the calls to the home were for illegal activity. Eighteen people were said to be living in the double-wide trailer home at the time of the shooting.
The 1990 silver Buick believed used in Thursday’s kidnapping is registered to Mary Ann Buck, and it was recovered on Mulberry Street at about 9 p.m., Pace said. The Buick and the pickup have been impounded by the sheriff’s office.
Pace said the preliminary investigation indicates Robert Buck was released recently from the Mississippi State Penitentiary and has an outstanding warrant issued by the Vicksburg Police Department charging him with aggravated domestic violence.
