FAYETTE — Jessie Polly Holloway Beverly died Friday, April 20, 2012. She was 102.
Mrs. Beverly was born in Fayette to Jesse and Minnie Rice Holloway. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Rust College and a Master of Science degree in library science from Atlanta University. She also studied at St. Louis University, Indiana State University and Delta State University.
She retired after 50 years of teaching in the Jefferson County and Claiborne County public schools. She was the first black librarian in Jefferson County.
She was a former member of Adams Chapel Methodist Church and served as a mother at Mount Zion Church of God in Christ. She served with the District Seven of the Mississippi Southern First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ and was affiliated with Fayette Garden Club, Professional Teachers Association, Chamber of Commerce and the American Red Cross.
The City of Fayette named the Polly Beverly Apartments and Polly Beverly Street in her honor.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mason R. Beverly; her brother, Thomas Holloway; and a daughter, Camille M. Beverly.
Survivors include a niece, Minnie Rose Robinson of Greenville; her caregivers, Mary Gales Phipps of Edwards, Joyce R. Smith of Lorman and Tracy Cook of Fayette; and cousins, other relatives and friends, including Lucinda Gales of Fayette.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jefferson County High School with Ernest Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. today at Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette.
