Gaines Byron Smith

BATESVILLE — Gaines Byron Smith died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville. He was 84.

Mr. Smith was born to Myrtle Dawson Smith and Elmer Sydney Smith Sr. in Roosevelt, La. He was a retired jeweler and watchmaker, having worked in the business for more than 60 years. He owned Plaza Jewelers in Batesville.

He served in the Navy in World War II and was a member of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Deaton Smith; and a brother, Elmer S. Smith Jr.

He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Smith Gray of Batesville; a son, Mark Deaton Smith of Batesville; a brother, Stanley G. Smith of Vicksburg; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Community Church in Batesville with the Rev. Sam Messina officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. Visitation will be at the church Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. with Rosary at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Chad Smith, Chris Smith, Stephen Smith, Ben Pearson, Ronnie Darby and Neal Hockaday.
