Southern Miss’ luck finally ran out.

Three Marshall pitchers held the Golden Eagles to one run Saturday, and the Herd evened the weekend series at a game apiece with a 2-1 victory.

Mike Mason pitched 61⁄3 innings for Marshall (15-27, 3-11 C-USA) to earn the victory. Josh King and Jesse Fernandez finished up, with Fernandez pitching the ninth inning for his fourth save.

The only run Mason gave up was on a solo homer to Travis Creel in the seventh inning. It was USM’s first home run since March 27, a span of 17 games.

That power outage was just part of a disturbing recent trend for Southern Miss (24-18, 8-6). It has scored two runs or less in each of its last six games. USM had won four of those, thanks to superb pitching, but couldn’t muster enough offense to take advantage of another great outing by Jake Drehoff on Saturday.

Drehoff gave up two runs on five hits over 61⁄3 innings. Nathan Gomez tagged him for a double in the first, then scored on a single by Eric Escobedo. In the fourth inning, Andrew Dundon delivered an RBI double to make it 2-0.
