Runners and walkers will hit the streets of downtown Vicksburg Saturday to kick off the Vicksburg Farmers’ Market at Jackson and Washington streets.
Registration for the Get Healthy Walk hosted by Shape Up Vicksburg begins at 8 a.m. for one-, 1½- and three-mile courses near the market. Participants start both short courses at Grove and Washington streets, head north on Washington before looping south on Levee Street.
The 1½-mile course traces a path down Pearl Street, Depot Street, then Mulberry Street before a long straightaway through the heart of the Washington Street commercial corridor.
“We decided to do this instead of the two-mile loop because it has been a popular route in the past and showcases the Washington Street businesses,” said Linnie Wheeless of Shape Up Sisters, the event’s organizers.
The three-mile route adds a half-mile block bounded by Walnut, First East, Cherry and South streets.
Activities at this year’s outdoor market include live music, a cooking demonstration by Chef John Pelton of River Region Medical Center and samples and activities for children.
The Vicksburg Farmers’ Market runs through July 28, every Saturday 8 to 11 a.m. and Wednesdays 4 to 7 p.m.
Since 2008, the market has provided a venue for growers in Warren County and surrounding counties to sell farm-fresh products and other homemade goods. For Saturday’s market, Warren County Master Gardeners will explain the ins and outs of becoming a master gardener. On July 14, Joelyn Curtis will hold a “Herb Garden Growing and Eating” seminar about growing and cooking with herbs.
