St. Aloysius made short work of the field, the Big Oaks Golf Club and its fourth title in five years.
Junior Nick Mekus won medalist honors with a two-day total of 144, shooting a pair of 72s to lead St. Al to a 52-stroke win Wednesday in the Class 1A state golf tournament.
Mekus was the lone holdover from last year’s senior-laden squad and he earned medalist honors for the second straight year.
“I thought our guys played really well on a great course,” St. Al coach Jim Taylor said. “It’s a tribute to our kids that work so hard at this and to all of the golf pros who help us out a lot. It’s a true community effort.”
Sophomore Sam Andrews shot a two-day total of 170 and eighth-grader Gabriel Riveros was one shot back with a 171. Junior Elliott Bexley carded a two-day tally of 172 and senior Nathan Fordice had a two-day tally of 194.
Ingomar was second with a score of 709 and Stringer was third with 728.
The bad news for the rest of the Class 1A field? All but Fordice will be back next season.
“I feel really good about our chances,” Taylor said. “I think we’ll have a good chance to repeat, but we’ve always got to play it out on the course.”
Class 6A Tourney
Parker Rutherford shot a second-round 73, but it wasn’t enough as Warren Central finished eighth out of 12 teams in the Class 6A state tournament in Hattiesburg.
Rutherford finished with a two-day total of 152. McKay Harris shot two 83s for a 166. Liam Hopson and Kyle Murphy shot two-day totals of 180 apiece.
Rutherford finished tied for 14th.
Oak Grove’s Grant Motter won medalist honors with a 134. Zach Myers of Ocean Springs shot a 139 for second place.
Tupelo shot a 570 for the team team title. Madison Central and Northwest Rankin tied with 609 for second place.
