Former Vicksburg police Chief Jimmy Brooks will be memorialized tonight in Washington, D.C.

Brooks, who was working in Madison at the time of his death, is one of 362 fallen officers whose names have been added this year to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The additions will be unveiled tonight during a candlelight vigil at the memorial.

Friends of the former chief say he deserves the honor but would have been humble about it.

β€œHe probably would have thought it was a little too much. He was always the kind to back out of the limelight,” said police Capt. Bobby Stewart.

Stewart was hired at the department in 1989 while Brooks was chief, but Stewart said he knew Brooks and his family long before he came to work for him.
