A former Vicksburg resident described by a friend and co-worker as outgoing and energetic was killed Tuesday night in a one-car accident on Mississippi 1 in Issaquena County.

Stephanie “Beth” Marshall, 41, of Greenville, died from injuries she received when her 2009 Chevrolet Volt left the highway and struck a tree about 3 miles south of Mayersville, about 8:15 p.m., Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol spokesman Cpl. Odis Easterling said.

He said Marshall was southbound on Mississippi 1 when her car ran off the road to the left. She overcorrected, and the car ran off the right side of the highway, where it struck a tree. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the accident report.

Issaquena County Coroner Angela Williams said Marshall died at the scene from internal injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, Easterling said.

Stephanie Marshall’s ex-husband, John, said they met in Greenville and moved to Vicksburg in 1996. He said she returned to Greenville in 2008. They had two daughters, Faith, 13, a student at Warren Central Junior High School, and Hope, 10, a student at Bowmar Elementary.

“She was a wonderful, outgoing, loving person,” he said. “She was a wonderful mother to our two daughters, and she was my best friend.”

Beth Marshall was a native of Greenville. She graduated from Washington School and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. She was a carpet designer for U.S. Axminster before marrying John Marshall and moving to Vicksburg.

While in Vicksburg, Beth Marshall worked in the accounting department at International Paper, and later as a designer for Hayes Marketing, John Marshall said. She later went back to work for Axminster, he said.

“She enjoyed crafting and scrap-booking, and she was active in our church,” he said. “We attended Bowmar Baptist Church and later went to First Baptist.”

Marshall said he did not know why she was driving toward Vicksburg Tuesday. He said Faith was being inducted into the National Honor Society at Warren Central Junior High, “and she told me she would not be able to make it. She asked me to buy a flower for her.”

Ann Lewis, a medical records nurse at Washington Care Center, a nursing home in Greenville where Stephanie Marshall worked, said, “She was my best friend.”

Lewis said Marshall came to Washington Care Center in Sept. 2011.

“She was wonderful at her job,” she said, “she was the best they ever had here.”

Lewis said Marshall always talked about her daughters, adding, “She adored them and wished they could live with her here.”

Funeral services for Stephanie Marshall are at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Chapel in Greenville. Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home of Greenville.

In addition to her daughters, she is survived by her parents, David and Cara Louise Potin of Greenville; and two sisters, Michelle Moore of Greenville and Amy Azar of Chattanooga, Tenn.
