High winds accompanying severe thunderstorms passing through Warren County Monday afternoon blew down trees and caused scattered power outages across the city and county, Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said.
Thunderstorms accompanied by winds clocked up to 60 mph hit about 3:30 p.m. Monday, he said. He said multiple trees were down in the area of Freetown and Tucker roads, forcing county officials to close Freetown Road Monday evening. He said the road was expected to reopen today.
Entergy spokesman Don Arnold said trees on power lines accounted for scattered outages affecting 1,877 customers in the county, including 800 customers in the Nailor Road area of southern Warren County. He said about 960 people, including Nailor Road, remained without power this morning, and power was expected to be restored late today.
Separately, Arnold said, about 35 businesses and residences between Bowmar Avenue and Depot Street were without power this morning because lightning hit two switches in the area.
The lightning strike apparently was Monday night, he said, but it was not reported until this morning.
