It’s been quite a senior year for Talbot Buys.

The Porters Chapel Academy product will play today in the MAIS All-Star baseball game at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. It will be the third all-star game of the year for Buys, who also suited up for the MAIS football and basketball games.

And to top it off, when he graduates from PCA, he’ll be his senior class’ valedictorian.

Buys said he realized a goal to make and play in the MAIS’ major sports trifecta.

“It’s awesome,” Buys said. “I feel real fortunate to do it. It was one goal of mine, to make all three games.”

At 6-foot-8, Buys’ height came in handy during the basketball all-star game after he helped the Eagles go 24-5 and win district and region titles. Football, however, is the sport Buys will play at the next level at Holmes Community College.

Buys said the football all-star game was fun, but being an academic all-star is the thing he’s most proud of.

“Ever since the sixth grade, it’s been very important to me to maintain my grades,” he said. “It’s taken a lot of hard work, especially with all the sports I play.”

Buys improved in both football and basketball, but might have made the most progress in baseball. He was Warren County’s leading hitter with a .500 average. As a pitcher, Buys went 4-2 with a 1.57 ERA and 63 strikeouts.

Today will be his last baseball game. On Monday, it’s back to work to get ready for Holmes’ preseason workouts. His coaches there want Buys to put on a few pounds before reporting to campus in early July.

“I know there are some really strong defensive ends in the Mississippi junior college league,” Buys said. “Most of them are solid, Division I guys. It’s going to be a big test for me. They want me to learn left tackle, and that’s protecting the quarterback’s blind side. I know I won’t be starting right away, it’s something I’m going to have to earn.”
