The key for the Bulldogs was clutch pitching.

Freshman Ross Mitchell pitched a five-inning gem in relief, scattering five hits and striking out three. Starter Brandon Woodruff went three innings, allowing one hit.

But no situation was more clutch than in the bottom of the ninth, with the Bulldogs clinging to a 3-0 lead.

Mitchell hit Riley Reynolds and gave up a single to Connor Harrell. Caleb Reed took over for Mitchell and induced a double-play.

After he hit next batter Andrew Harris to put two on with two outs, MSU coach John Cohen went to Ferriss Trophy winner and SEC Pitcher of the Year Chris Stratton in a rare appearance out of the bullpen. Stratton needed only four pitches to induce a game-ending groundout to start the celebration.

While runs were hard to come by in the tournament for the Bulldogs, they scored just enough to get by.

Adam Frazier ripped a one-out single in the third inning to get MSU into business. Brent Brownlee grounded out to move Frazier to second. Trey Porter walked and Hunter Renfroe’s single up the middle put runners on second and third. A wild pitch by Vanderbilt starter Tyler Beede allowed Frazier to slide home for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the MSU offense scratched out some more runs. Mitch Slauter led off the frame with a single. Sam Frost drew a one-out walk and Daryl Norris was hit by Beede to load the bases, knocking Beede out of the game.

Steven Rice walked Frazier to plate one run, while Brownlee flied out to right field deep enough to score Slauter and complete the scoring.

Renfroe and Slauter led the Bulldogs with two hits apiece.

Three Bulldogs: Jonathan Holder, Frazier and Demarcus Henderson, joined Ole Miss’ Matt Snyder on the All-SEC Tournament team.
