A beating at a Memorial Day weekend cookout left one man in the hospital and another on the run.

At 1:05 a.m. Sunday, Tommy Hull, 45, 1314 E. Magnolia St., was hit in the head with a piece of lumber during a fight in the 1300 block of Bowmar Avenue, police Capt. Bobby Stewart said.

Hull was taken to River Region Medical Center and then to University Medical Center in Jackson where he remained in stable condition this morning, Stewart said.

The assailant has been identified, said Stewart, who declined to release the name until an arrest is made.
