Taking a different approach to the traditional Bible school style, Bowmar Baptist Church has been offering the four-day Bowmar Sports Camp for the past several years.
This year, the camp will be from 5:30 to 8:20 p.m. Monday through June 7.
“The sports camp just kind of morphed from Vacation Bible School,” said Bryan Tribble, the children’s pastor for Bowmar.
The camp is free and open to students who have completed kindergarten to sixth grade he said.
Last year the camp had around 500 kids participate and about 100 volunteers from the church to help run the camp.
This year Tribble said volunteers helping with the camp will include baseball players Michael Artman, from the University of Southern Mississippi, Justin Pigott who played for Mississippi State and Michael Busby who is at the University of Alabama Birmingham.
Also volunteering are golf pro Kent Smith, Hinds Community College head softball coach Mike Grzanich and Chris Busby; who served as a local baseball coach.
