High temps were steady in the 80s throughout the week in Vicksburg while nighttime lows drifted from the 60s to the 70s. About a third of an inch of rain fell during the week.
On the local gauge, the Mississippi River receded to 9 feet before inching up to a reading of 10 feet. Forecasters were expecting the river to measure 10.4 feet today.
James Ransom pleaded guilty to manslaughter by culpable negligence in the killing of Robert Banks over a dice game on Martha Street last year. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum allowed, by Judge M. James Chaney.
The bodies of James “E-40” East Sr., 39, and Jermaine D. Walton, 25, were recovered from Long Lake after an 18-hour search. The men had been fishing, along with Joshua Williams, when the boat they were in took on water and flipped.
Warren Central pitcher Cody Waddell was chosen Vicksburg Post Player of the Year. Vicksburg High coach Ryan Grey was selected the Post’s Coach of the Year for All-County Baseball.
Street Ball, a program resurrected by members of the Vicksburg Police Department, are attempting to combat youth crime during summer break by revamping the Street Ball program. Police said juvenile crime rates during summer have dropped about 70 percent since the resurrection of the series, which features athletic competition, speakers and education opportunities for ages 7-18.
Mark Watts, of Port Gibson, was killed when his truck collided with a jackknifed trailer carrying a car on North Washington Street. Watts had just left work at Anderson-Tully, and the driver of the trailer was not injured.
Warren County supervisors decided that coordinating volunteer fire response in the county will not come with additional duties. The decision ended monthlong consideration of the job being folded into another department.
The CodeRed emergency alert system, officially online countywide, began with a smooth start as 111 phone numbers were registered into the program in its first two days. The system offers general alerts, evacuation orders and bad weather statements.
Dry weather and warmer temps are leading to high numbers of deer sightings in town. Southern whitetail deer typically move during fall and winter.
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center was named the lead organization for a key supercomputer program in the Department of Defense. ERDC will head up the department’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program following approval by Congress last December.
The Mississippi Department of Health has ordered the repair of a broken, leaking sewer line along an unpaved alley off the north side of West Magnolia Street. City officials said the area is private property, however, and state law prohibits city crews from working on it, allowing raw sewage to overflow into the neighborhood.
A court order has proclaimed Mayor Paul Winfield’s cell phone records fair game in his former chief of staff’s lawsuit against the city. Calls and texts between July 2009 and April 2011 should be produced as part of the case, the order said.
Rainbow Casino will become Lady Luck under the Isle of Capri corporation in 2013. A $5 million renovation is also under way and its completion will coincide with the official name change.
