County fails to make decision on salary for fire coordinator position

The base salary of the Warren County’s fire coordinator position will not be known when applications are made for the post, supervisors said Monday.
County supervisor met for two hours Monday without a consensus how much to pay a new coordinator next fiscal year. The post has been vacant since May 31, when Kelly Worthy officially retired.
Coordination of fire response outside Vicksburg city limits among six volunteer fire protection districts paid $21,500 before Worthy’s retirement last month.
It also included management of garbage pickup and made for a $42,000 total base salary. The firefighting half of the job will stand alone when a new coordinator is chosen, as the garbage-related duties are to be split off to the environmental clerk and the county’s building permit field officer.
County employees get first dibs on the job, as per current county policy, possibly this week, before the job is listed publicly and applications considered by early July, County Administrator John Smith said.
A key requirement of the position — being a certified firefighter — may make the internal advertising moot, as a majority of the volunteer ranks work in private sector professions, and some are firefighters in the city.
