Two of this year’s Ferriss Trophy finalists officially turned pro Tuesday.
Mississippi State pitcher Chris Stratton, who won the Ferriss Trophy as the state’s best college player, and Ole Miss second baseman Alex Yarbrough signed contracts with the major leagues teams that drafted them.
Stratton signed with the San Francisco Giants and received a $1.85 million signing bonus, according to a report in Baseball America. Stratton was the Giants’ first-round pick, 20th overall. He won the Southeastern Conference’s Pitcher of the Year award in addition to the Ferriss Trophy, following a season in which he went 11-2 with a 2.38 ERA and 127 strikeouts.
Yarbrough signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He was a fourth-round pick and stands to earn around $302,800 under Major League Baseball’s draft bonus slotting system.
Yarbrough hit .380 as a junior and was an All-SEC selection.
Mississippi State pitcher Nick Routt, a 16th-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, also signed his contract Tuesday.
