Reader silent for too long on actions of Mayor Winfield

To my fellow citizens of Vicksburg.

First, I heard our mayor would not be our full-time employee but would be given a full-time salary. He would continue to be the city attorney for Port Gibson. Recall came to mind, but I did nothing.

Second, I heard that a full-time assistant would be hired for the mayor. Salary? $72,000. (Maybe Mayor Paul Winfield could not do the duties he was elected to perform because of his other job for another city). “What would her duties be to merit that pay?” came to mind, but I did nothing.

Third, I heard about the purchase of a large number of parade barriers, which were “loaned” to the mayor’s other city. Rent came to mind, but I did nothing.

Fourth, I heard that Winfield no longer needed a mayoral assistant. “Why not?” came to mind, but I did nothing.

Fifth, I heard that the City of Vicksburg was sued due to the alleged sexual adventures between our mayor and his $72,000-a-year assistant. “Maybe my second questions is answered,” came to mind, but I did nothing.

Then I read in The Vicksburg Post that the court ruled the mayor had to release his phone and text records. The mayor’s response was to appeal the ruling. “The city’s insurance will pay for it,” the mayor said.

We, you and I are the City of Vicksburg. It is our money that pays salaries, possible increased insurance premiums, travel expenses, etc. We need to heed the words of Sir Edmund Burke, who said, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
