Fewer than 60 people were still without power Friday night after thunderstorms slammed Vicksburg Thursday evening, knocking down trees and cutting electricity.

Entergy spokesman Don Arnold said about 620 customers south of Interstate 20 were still without power Friday morning. Attempts to contact Arnold Friday night were unsuccessful, but Entergy’s online outage viewer showed 59 customers still without power.

The violent patches of weather might continue well into next week, however, and high temperatures are forecast to drop into the 80s by the early part of the week. The National Weather Service has forecast a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday.

During the round of storms Thursday night, downed trees caused problems for a few people in the city. A tree fell through the roof of Lindsay Jackson’s Parkside Drive home, landing in her dining room around 8 a.m. Friday morning after the storms ended.

“I wasn’t there, someone was house-sitting for me,” Jackson said. “It’s just one of those things, I guess. There’s not much you can do.”

Jackson said she never lost power at her home during the storm, and a crew was coming in today to clear the tree.

Lightning during the storm sparked two fires Thursday night, one at Rose Hill M.B. Church on Stenson Road and another in the attic of a home on Mill Creek Drive, about a mile from the church.

Walter Weathersby, pastor of the church, said just about everything inside the church was destroyed.

Fisher Ferry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tommy Stewart said an attic fire on Mill Creek Drive was extinguished in minutes.
