WHARTON, Texas — Virginia “Ginny” Nevels Williams of Wharton, Texas, passed from this life into eternity in the presence of God on July 12, 2012, in Columbiana, Ala. She was 88.
Virginia was born on July 29, 1923, in Fayette and was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, David G. Williams, whom she married on Feb. 24, 1943, in State College, Pa. She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Brown Nevels, Wayne Nevels, Joe Nevels, Jim Nevels; and one sister, Mary Nevels Hebler.
Survivors include one sister, Martha Ann Evans of Vicksburg; a son, Joel Williams and his wife, Debbie; a daughter, Peggy Grote and her husband Steve; four grandchildren, Kellye Demski, Zach Williams, David Grote, and Travis Grote; and five great-grandchildren.
Virginia enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her time being a Sunday School teacher of 5-year-olds. In later years, she was always a regular at the Wednesday morning Bible study at the Abell Street Church of Christ, where she was a member for over 30 years.
She was quite the seamstress, affording the enjoyment of dressing “homemade” while exhibiting a style that kept saying “store bought”. She spent many years being informally known as the “assistant golf coach” at the University of Houston, being such an asset for decades to her husband, coach Dave Williams. Together they were able to travel over the entire United States, Japan, Scotland and Mexico with the University of Houston Golf Team.
Her family came to rely on her wit, intellect, steely perception and uncanny ability to always verbally define any moment or situation with polite deftness.
Visitation will be held at Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton today , July 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.
There will be a committal service at the Evergreen Cemetery in Wharton on Monday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of life at the Wharton Funeral Home at 11 a.m.
Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family directs those desiring memorials to the University of Houston Golf Team, 3100 Cullen Blvd, Golf Office, Houston, TX 77204 or the Abell Street Church of Christ, 501 Abell St. Wharton, TX 77488.
May she rest in peace and may her memory be eternal.
