Whittington leads junior championship

The next two weeks will be a busy time on the golf links for 12-year-old Karley Whittington.

The first order of business is this week’s Warren County Junior Golf Championship that began Monday at Clear Creek.

Whittington shot an 85 to share the first-round lead with Laura Phillips in the girls event. Today, the tournament takes a break as Phillips, along with the boys first-round leader Nick Mekus and Warren Central golfer Parker Rutherford take part in the True South Junior Pro-Am at Annandale Country Club.

Whittington is still too young to participate in the PGA Tour event’s junior pro-am, but she’ll get involved as a standard bearer carrying a sign with the scores of a particular pairing starting Saturday.

On Wednesday, it’s back to golf as the Warren County tournament concludes with another 18 holes.
