Betty Gibson Matthews

Betty Gibson Matthews died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 79.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Matthews was retired from McRae’s Department Store. She was a member of Mound Baptist Church in Mound, La.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Matthews; two sisters, Doris Reynolds and Mary Jo Oakes; her father, Langston E. Gibson Sr.; and her mother, Katie Nelson Gibson.

She is survived by a son, Bubba Matthews and wife Tena of Vicksburg; three daughters, Pat Lummus and husband Jasper, Mickey Ross and husband James and Gail Matthews, all of Vicksburg; one brother, Langston “Sonny” Gibson Jr. and wife Betty of Vicksburg; one sister, Helen Gibson Leggett of Vicksburg; three grandchildren, Lindsay Brown and Will Matthews, both of Vicksburg, and Katie Jane Werkin of Columbus, Ga.; and three great-grandchildren, Colby Smith, Chloe Smith and Corbyn Brown, all of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. James Busby officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the service.
