Waites finishes fourth at Junior Olympics

St. Aloysius pole vaulter Maggie Waites and the Mississippi Heat Track Team competed at the Amateur Athletics Union Junior Olympics in Humble, Texas on Wednesday.
The even wraps up on Friday.
Waites tied for fourth in a field of 35 in the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 6 inches.
Port Gibson’s Tommy McCaplin was first with a time of 10.72 seconds in the men’s ages 17-18 100-meter dash preliminaries, while Vicksburg’s Terrell Smith was eighth. McCaplin qualifed for the finals by running fifth in a time of 10.71 in the semifinals, while Smith was eliminated after a 14th-place finish in a time of 10.89.
Smith was 17th in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 22.02
In the girls’ age 14 100-meter dash preliminaries, Vicksburg’s Keiyana Gaskin was second with a time of 12.40 seconds and had a fourth-place finish in the semifinals with a time of 12.33. The run qualified her for the finals.
In the 200-meter dash, Gaskin qualifed for the semifinals with an eighth-place finish in a time of 25.29 seconds.
Vicksburg’s Tymesha Nabors was seventh in the girls’ age 14 200-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 28.52 seconds, qualifying her for the finals, where she finished sixth with a time of 28.37.
In the age 14 100-meter dash preliminaries, Te-Darious Brown was eighth with a time of 11.68. He was eliminated in the semifinals after placing ninth with a time of 11.64. He was 18th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.57 that qualified him for the semifinals.
Vicksburg’s Taylor Gray qualified for the semifinals in the girls’ sub-midget 11-year-olds’ 100-meter dash with a 13th place finish in a time of 13.37 seconds, but she was knocked out in the semifinals after a 17th place finish. Gray was 33rd in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 28.68.
