BACK ON TRACKEagles regain mojo with lopsided win

Park Place hasn’t won a game this season. It lost a half-dozen players from last year’s team. It’s only scored two touchdowns in five games.

Yes, Porters Chapel’s 46-0 win over Park Place came with a bunch of caveats. And no, the Eagles don’t care.

The Eagles took advantage of the struggling Crusaders to break out of a major offensive slump of their own. They scored seven touchdowns — five more than they had in the previous two games combined — and got a needed district win. Even if it was against a lesser opponent, it was a therapeutic Friday night for a team whose confidence was a bit shaken after back-to-back losses.

“It’s just a confidence builder,” PCA coach Wade Patrick said. “I told them, ‘I want you to play like you’re going to win every game.’ I want them to come out with that attitude against the Bentons, and some of the more physical teams. But just from a confidence standpoint, it’s going to be a team morale builder.”

PCA (2-2, 1-1 District 4-A) began its first drive of the game Friday at its own 46-yard line. Peter Harris ran for 14 yards to take it into Park Place territory, and the Eagles never saw their side of the field again. Only seven of the game’s 86 plays from scrimmage were snapped in PCA territory — that first one, then six on a penalty-aided Park Place drive late in the second quarter.

Harris finished with 81 rushing yards and a touchdown in barely a quarter of action. He also returned a punt for a score. Logan Pickering added 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Justin McDaniel had 55 yards, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion run.

“We were executing our plays very well,“ Pickering said. “Blocking, getting our mechanics down was the main thing. It was practice and getting our reps in. They (Park Place) were a good team. They were fighting until the end.”

Although the Eagles were completely dominant, Patrick didn’t quite get everything he would’ve liked from his team’s performance

Four PAT attempts failed, either because of bad snaps, holds or kicks.

Linebacker Rich Murphy, who has had season-ending knee injuries each of the past two seasons, hurt his knee again in the fourth quarter. Patrick said the extent of the injury wouldn’t be known until early this week.

And sophomore quarterback Zac Morgan didn’t get as many chances to throw the football as Patrick would’ve liked. Morgan went 3-for-5 for 40 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Morgan’s 10-yard touchdown pass to P.J. Lassiter put PCA ahead 27-0 in the opening minute of the second quarter, and Patrick said he didn’t want to keep throwing with such a big lead.

“I would’ve liked to have thrown it more, but when it gets like that we’re just going to try to get out of here with a win and keep everybody healthy,” Patrick said. “I would have loved to have thrown it about 15 times. But when it’s 39-0 at halftime, I’m not trying to rub it in.”
