Flashes enjoying splash of success

Homecoming couldn’t have been any sweeter for St. Aloysius Friday night against Resurrection.

St. Al’s defense had its best night of the season, putting the clamps on Resurrection’s attack all night long in a 21-6 thrashing.

On special teams, DeMichael Harris — who’s been on the verge of busting out with a huge return with every kickoff — came through with a 90-yard return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff.

Offensively, running back/linebacker Elliott Bexley had two short touchdowns as St. Al jumped out in front and stayed there.

The road gets tougher this week, when the Flashes face Stringer (6-1, 5-0 Region 4-1A). For at least one night, however, they got to enjoy an easy victory.

“It feels great and we played hard all night,” Bexley said. “We had a lot of fun all week, but we maintained focus. We’ve got to keep improving.”

Like a hit pop tune, the Flashes (2-5, 2-4) got in a comfortable flow offensively and moved the chains. After starting the season with 31 points and four losses, the Flashes have put up 54 points in their last three and won two of them.

“We got in a good rhythm calling plays and (quarterback) Connor (Smith) did a good job of controlling the game,” St. Al coach B.J. Smithhart said. “When we give him time and help him, he does a good job. I’m really proud of them.”

Best of all, the game snapped a streak of three straight games in which a St. Al player has torn a knee ligament. It’s led to a lot of reshuffling of the lineup, but the Flashes have adjusted well.

“We finally broke a streak of three straight games with a torn ACL and I guess it’s a curse at our school,” Bexley said. “I’ve played every position on offense except for center and with (Class) 1A football, you just never know with anything.”
