Warren County was among 60 counties in Mississippi with an unemployment rate higher than the state’s in September, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security reported Wednesday.
Countywide, the jobless rate was 10.1 percent for the month, up from a revised 9.6 percent in August, the agency said. Jobless benefits were sought by 2,200 people during the month, up from 2,070. The rate is lower than the 11.6 percent reported in September 2011.
Statewide, unemployment was 9 percent, up from a revised 8.5 percent in August. The state rate is also lower than a year ago, when it was 10.8 percent. Seasonally adjusted, the statewide rate for September was 9.2 percent.
Sectors showing the biggest losses were leisure and hospitality and manufacturing. The biggest gains came in government and educational and health services.
Locally, about 40 job losses expected from the Bunge-Ergon ethanol plant at the Port of Vicksburg figured into the month’s total. The Vicksburg WIN Job Center responded to news of the plant closing by Nov. 30 by employing a “rapid response” and assisting employees there with job searches.
Rankin County posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month, at 5.9 percent, up from 5 percent in August. Clay County recorded the highest rate in September, at 17.1 percent, up from 16.4 percent in August.
Rates dropped in Claiborne and Sharkey counties — by seven-tenths of a point, to 14.4 percent, in Claiborne and four-tenths, to 9.9 percent, in Sharkey. Issaquena County’s rate went up nearly five points in September, to 15.2 percent.
