Maintenance mechanic Michael Bercume is silhouetted against the morning sun while pressure-washing Memorial Arch at the entrance to the Vicksburg National Military Park Monday. The annual cleaning of the arch, moved to the park from Clay Street in 1967, was to continue through today. The arch was dedicated in 1920, three years after Congress allotted $150,000 for a reunion of Civil War veterans. The arch was built with $35,000 left over from the gathering.
