Germantown scored four goals in the first half and held on for a 4-0 win over Vicksburg in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs Wednesday in Madison.
Germantown (10-4-3) will advance to play Center Hill in the second round Saturday.
The Gators finished 5-16 after a slow start in November and December, but second-year coach Michael Guidry believes his program is making progress after putting together a strong second half of the season, its first in Class 5A.
“I talked to our seniors on the bus and I feel like we’re headed in the right direction,” Guidry said. “Making the playoffs is a big goal, but we didn’t really hit our stride until January. For us to advance, we’ve got to be getting our feet underneath ourselves in November and December and be peaking in January.”
Vicksburg will have a totally different look next season, as seven seniors leave the program.
“Losing seven seniors is a big number,” Guidry said. “Five of them were regular contributors and the other two were also contributing, so next year, we’re going to be starting fresh. It’s going to be a big turnaround.”
