Plans for a new building in front of River Region Medical Center to house physicians who practice at The Street Clinic takes another step close to reality Monday with a groundbreaking ceremony, hospital officials said Thursday.

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, state Sen. Briggs Hopson III, Mayor George Flaggs Jr., and Warren County Board of Supervisors President Bill Lauderdale will accompany hospital CEO Doug Sills to turn dirt on the building, described in news release as a 63,000 square-foot medical office building. The event begins at 11:30 a.m.

Last May, Sills said it would be built on open space in front of the hospital’s main campus on U.S. 61 North. Doctors’ offices and outpatient therapy services that are currently located on McAuley Drive will be moved there, and a second MRI machine will be installed in the building. The hospital has specified no plan for The Street Clinic property after the new annex opens.

Construction is set to begin March 1. The hospital set a tentative completion date of May 2015.

The 223-bed Vicksburg hospital is owned by Community Healthy Systems, based in Brentwood, Tenn. Documents filed last fall with the Mississippi State Health Department say an affiliate of an Indiana company would build the $13.2 million structure and River Region would lease it. Construction was originally set to start last October.

A certificate of need for the addition was issued by the state in December. State law requires a certificate of need to avoid duplication of health care services and control costs.

Built in 1991, The Street Clinic houses pediatrics, immunology, eye, ear, nose and throat, family practice, infectious disease, internal medicine, nephrology, neurology and urology.

The planned addition to River Region’s main campus and closure of The Street Clinic comes about six years after Marian Hill chemical dependency unit moved from the clinic to the hospital’s West Campus on North Frontage Road.
