McCOMB — Alvin Monroe Newell Sr., 80, of McComb, died peacefully on Feb. 24, 2014, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at First Baptist Church, McComb with Dr. Woody Rimes officiating. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in McComb, and again at 9 a.m. preceding the service at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. Jones Family Funeral Services in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newell was born Aug. 7, 1933, to Marion Monroe and Ladell Smith Newell of Brookhaven. He graduated from Central High School in 1953 and married Kathryn Boyd of McComb. After graduating, he served in the Army and was stationed in Tacoma, Wash. before returning home. Alvin was employed by Mississippi Power and Light Co. (Entergy) for 39 years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of McComb, where he served as a deacon and treasurer, and served on many other committees.  He loved gardening and traveling to see his grandchildren.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Kathryn; son, Alvin Monroe Newell Jr. and wife Melanie of The Woodlands, Texas; daughter Pat Humphries and husband Mike of Vicksburg; his sister, Ilene Newell Krohn of Raymond; brother Larry Grayson (Shirley) Newell of Flowood; six granddaughters, Lauren Newell (Eric) Martin of The Woodlands, Brooke Humphries (Joel) Cheslek of Brandon, Whitney Newell (Andrew) Ballay of The Woodlands, Lindsey Newell (Cody) Bruton of Edmond, Okla., Megan Humphries (Will) Sanders of Vicksburg, and Kathryn Elizabeth Humphries of Starkville; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Brad Boyd, Eric Martin, Joel Cheslek, Andrew Ballay, Cody Bruton, and Will Sanders. First Baptist Church of McComb’s John the Baptist Adult 7 Men’s Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
