A 16-year-old was at University of Mississippi Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the abdomen following a drive-by shooting Saturday in the 1300 block of South Street.
Witnesses told Vicksburg police at least two shots were fired just after 6 p.m. from a maroon sedan headed east on South Street with at least three males in the vehicle, Police Chief Walter Armstrong said. The car was seen moving through a group of between 10 and 15 youths playing basketball in the street.
Armstrong declined to release the name of the shooting victim.
No other injuries were reported. Armstrong said the juvenile shot was taken to UMMC from River Region Medical Center. Police spotted the vehicle later Saturday evening.
“We’re very confident we’ll make an arrest,” Armstrong said.

Vicksburg residents hurt in crash
Eight people, at least some of whom are from Vicksburg, were hospitalized Saturday night after a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 20 between Clinton and Bolton.
The crash occurred at about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of I-20 and North Norrell Road when a westbound Mercury Mountaineer overturned and ejected five passengers, said Julius Hutson, spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.
“We do believe some of them are from Vicksburg,” Hutson said, but he did not release any names of the crash victims.
Eight people were in the vehicle when it overturned, and those who were ejected are believed to have not been wearing seat belts, he said.
“The vehicle is designed to hold that many people,” he said.
Three of the crash victims were taken by helicopter to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where they were in critical condition Saturday night, he said.
The other five were taken to UMMC by ambulance, but their condition was not available Saturday night.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but it appears the wreck might have been caused when a tire blew out on the Mountaineer, Hutson said.
