Three critical after I-20 wreck

Three Vicksburg teens injured Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 20 between Clinton and Bolton were in critical condition this morning.

Kaylah Steadman, 13, and Cameron Cooper and Kayla McLeod, both 16, were injured about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of I-20 and North Norrell Road.

All three were in critical condition this morning at University of Mississippi Medical Center, hospital spokesman Jack Mazurack said.

The crash occured when a westbound Mercury Mountaineer carrying eight people — all of Vicksburg — overturned and ejected five passengers, said Julius Hutson, spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol.

The vehicle was driven by Kathryn Nelson, 32.

Others in the wreck were Sheryl Mounger, 18, Dannell Peoples, 15, Mary Katherine Archer, 10 and LaRubyan Bailey, 14.

“We believe it was caused by a blowout,” Hutson said, adding that the case is still under investigation.

He said no citations were issued.

Hutson has perviously said that the five passengers who were ejected were not wearing seat belts, though the vehicle is designed to hold that many people.
