Arkansas-Pine Bluff knocks off Jackson State

Tevin Hammond scored 16 points and Davon Haynes added 13 as Arkansas-Pine Bluff held on to defeat Jackson State 66-59 on Monday night.

The Golden Lions (12-17, 10-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference) shot 48.6 percent from the field. Daniel Broughton finished with 12 points and Trent Whiting had 10.

Jackson State (11-17, 7-9) shot 42 percent, but went 1-of-15 from beyond the arc. Julysses Nobles scored 16 points and Brandon West contributed 14.

UAPB led 30-27 at halftime, and pushed that lead to eight, 40-32, after a layup by Haynes at the 13:34 mark. Jackson State responded with a 10-4 run to pull within two.

Ghiavonni Robinson drilled a 3-pointer, and Haynes and Whiting each added a pair of free throws to make it 55-47. A Noble layup cut it to 59-57 with 41 seconds left, but UAPB sank 7 of 8 eight free throws to seal it.

 Grambling 72, Mississippi Valley St. 70

GRAMBLING, La. — Antwan Scott scored 21 points, including a late 3-pointer, as Grambling State beat Mississippi Valley State 72-70 Monday night.

Grambling State (4-21, 3-13 Southwest Athletic Conference) struggled offensively, shooting just 41.5 percent from the field, 21.4 percent from deep and 61 percent from the free throw line, but got to the foul line 45 times and converted 25.

Mississippi Valley State (9-21, 5-12) finished 13-of-20 from the free throw line.
