The home of one of Warren County’s seven volunteer firefighters of the year was destroyed in a fire off Oak Ridge Road Thursday morning.

The home at 113 Chandler’s Cove was “40 percent involved” in a fiery blaze when firefighters arrived just after 10 a.m. Warren County Fire Coordinator Jerry Briggs said.

The home belonged to Holly and Steven Shy, both of whom are volunteer firefighters at Northeast Volunteer Fire Department. Holly won top honors from the department earlier this year.

No one was inside when the fire started, Briggs said, but three dogs escaped the home unharmed.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but fire investigators theorized it may have started from the dryer.

Holly Shy had taken her son to a doctor to get shots, Northeast Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Fields said. The Shys have two sons.

“As we speak we’re getting sizes and trying to figure out what they need,” Fields said. “Firefighters take care of their own.”

Steven Shy was at work at the time of the fire.

Firefighters battled a separate blaze earlier Thursday at Brighter Day Child Care, 525 Beechwood Road. Firefighters fought the flames until 5 a.m., Briggs said, adding the building was a total loss.

Briggs said no one was in the building at the time of the fire which is under investigation.
