Shaw tops Hinds AHS for 1A championship

JACKSON (AP) — Zedric Bass scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Shaw held off Hinds AHS 60-57 to claim the MHSAA Class 1A boys state championship on Thursday.

Shaw (26-7) won its first state title since 1972. Hinds AHS led by five points midway through the third quarter before Shaw rallied for the win.

Jarius Smith led Hinds AHS (29-5) with 18 points.

In other state championship games Thursday:

• H.W. Byers won its fourth straight state title by beating Scott Central 69-54 in the Class 2A girls final. Scott Central’s Victoria Vivians scored 43 points.

• Kennedy (32-0) capped a perfect season by beating Pine Grove 39-34 for the Class 1A girls title.

• S.V. Marshall held off Baldwyn, 45-43, for the Class 2A boys title.
