One tough loss doesn’t put the Lady Flashes out. That’s the message coach Candice Reeder wanted her team to embrace on the heels of a 9-0 loss to Riverside High School (La.). Tuesday night.
“With that first game, I was frustrated and the girls were  frustrated,” she said. “I think after seeing how humiliating that was, they didn’t want to go through that again.”
In the second game of  the doubleheader at Bazinsky Park, the Lady Flashes overcame an early four-run deficit in the first inning and held off a late rally by Riverside to win 12-9.
After the game, Reeder said she was impressed with her players’ response.
“That’s how we’re used to playing,” she said. “I think it says a lot about their character.”
After posting one run in the top of the first inning of game two, the Lady Flashes surrendered five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Reeder said she likes her team’s response.
“They bounced righ back,” she said.
Reeder said she expected as much from her team, saying that they encourage maximum effort regardless of the score.
“They give it 110 percent the whole time.”
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Flashes’ bats broke out, tallying four runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at five.
The inning started with walks by Julie Mabry and Sara Hudson.
A double by Madison Heggins drove in Mabry and moved Hudson to third, making the score 5-2.
Perry Gillis then doubled to center, bringing in Hudson.
On the next at bat,Kelsey Davidson delivered a perfect sacrifice bunt as Mabry scored.
Avery Parmen, who came in as a substitute for pitcher Allie Willis, then doubled to bring Gillis home and tie the game at 5-5 after three and a half innings.
Parmen then retired the next three batters, striking out two.
Both teams went three up, three down in the fifth inning before the Lady Flashes took advantage of two wild pitches and error tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead.
St. Al added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning on the bakc of a two-run single from Gillis and an RBI double from Madison Heggins.
Riverside posted four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not continue the momentum before a ground out ended the game.
St. Al improved to 3-5 on the season.
