Robert Henry Chu, 77, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at his home in Norfolk, Va.
He was born April 22, 1936, to the late Beatrice Chin Chu and the late Shik Chu, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He moved from New York to Vicksburg in 1947 with his family, and attended Carr Central High School, where he developed his love for sports, especially football. He was also a member of First Baptist Church in Vicksburg.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving at Sixth Naval District based in Charleston, S.C. He was assigned to the ship USS Newport News, which was homeported at Norfork, and served several tours of duty to Europe and Central America. He had worked at the U.S. Navy base in Norfolk for almost 30 years when he retired in 1996.
In Norfolk, he pursued his love of sports, especially attending the Admirals hockey games and the Norfolk Tides baseball games, as well as New York Yankees baseball games. He faithfully attended the annual Navy vs. Army football game in Philadelphia, Penn.
He is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Chu, with whom he lived in Norfolk, Eleanor Wong (Dr. Stanley Wong) of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Eltha Wong (the late Mr. Paul Wong) of Arlington Heights, Ill.; two nieces, Melissa Pfluger (Kurt) and Melinda Gonzalez (Eric) of Calif.;  two nephews, Gregory Wong and Richard Wong of Illinois; three grandnieces, Taylor Klein, Quincey Klein and Lila Gonzalez; and two grandnephews, Corey Gonzalez and Rodrigo Gonzalez; and cousins and other relatives.
Visitation will be Friday, March 21, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with Dr. Matt Buckles, pastor of First Baptist Church, Vicksburg, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbarers will be Robert N. Gordon Jr., Jack Fowler, William “Red” Fuller, Willie Hughes, Joe Tom, Minor Ferris, Ken Chung, and Sam Wong.
