PCA hangs on to beat Manchester Academy

There were a few uncomfortable moments for Porters Chapel on Monday, but in the end there was also another victory.

Booth Buys went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Sam Kirk had two hits and scored twice as the Eagles gave up a good chunk of a nine-run lead before holding on to beat Manchester Academy 9-6.

It was PCA’s sixth win in seven games, and the fourth time in five games it has scored at least nine runs. Steven Busma struck out six batters in 6 1/3 innings before running into trouble in the seventh, and Ben Harper finished up for his second save of the season.

Two errors and a three-run double by Andy Erickson helped Manchester make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. The Mavericks, though, never got the tying run to the plate. Harper, after giving up Erickson’s double, got a ground out and a pop out to put a damper on the rally.

PCA’s Jeremy Williams had a two-run single, and Kirk doubled and scored a run in the top of the second inning as PCA sprinted out to a 5-0 lead. It added one more run in the fourth, then three in the sixth — two of them coming in on a single by Buys — to make it 9-0.

PCA will play three division games this week, starting with today’s contest at Veritas at 4 p.m.
