A Vicksburg teen who told police he accidently shot himself in the head was hospitalized this morning.

The 16-year-old was conscious and alert when police found him at about 1 a.m. today near Harrison and First North streets, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

The teen, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, told police he had found the gun and was playing with it when he accidently shot himself, Williams said.

The boy was taken to River Region Medical Center by ambulance and later airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where he was being evaluated this morning after undergoing surgery.

 

Riverboat workers
caught in Coast Guard sting

Two riverboat workers were charged with misdemeanor drug possession Wednesday after the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement boarded their commercial boat.

At 10 a.m. a 25-year-old from Colt City, Ark., was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of Valium, and a 55-year-old from Sturdivant, Mo., was arrested and charged with possession of Xanax, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

The Vicksburg Post, in most instances, does not identify suspects arrested for or convicted of misdemeanors.

The men were arrested as part of an operation by the U.S. Coast Guard Lower Mississippi River Sector law enforcement division from Memphis, Pace said.

“They had boarded several commercial vessels,” he said.

Warren County Sheriff’s Department and a K-9 officer from Vicksburg Police Department assisted the Coast Guard.

Both men were given dates to appear in Warren County Justice Court, Pace said.

 

Mazda stolen from casino

A car was missing this morning after a theft Wednesday at Riverwalk Casino, 1046 Warrenton Road.

At 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a burgundy 1994 Mazda MX6 bearing Mississippi tag NE1 TRYN was reported stolen from the casino parking lot, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

 

Electronics missing in burglary

Two televisions and a video game console were missing this morning following a burglary Wednesday in Vicksburg.

At 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, a 42-inch television valued at $250, a 32-inch television valued at $200 and a PlayStation 3 were reported stolen from a home in the 100 block of Elizabeth Circle, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

Entry was gained to the home by kicking in the door, she said.
