Southern Miss takes opener against FAU

Another brilliant outing by Christian Talley kept Southern Miss’ hot streak going.

Talley threw seven shutout innings to lead Southern Miss to a 2-0 victory over Florida Atlantic.

Talley, who was selected the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for a 12-strikeout performance against Texas-San Antonio, scattered seven hits but walked only one batter. He struck out four.

Bradley Roney pitched the last two innings for his eighth save of the season. He also went 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored.

Southern Miss (14-12, 5-2 C-USA) won for the seventh time in nine games.

Alabama 7, Ole Miss 6

Casey Hughston drove in the go-ahead run on a ground out in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Alabama’s bullpen finally got control of a wild game late to beat Ole Miss (21-6, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) in their series opener in Tuscaloosa.

Hughston also had an RBI single and Chance Vincent hit a two-run homer during a four-run second inning for Alabama (17-8, 4-3).

Ole Miss’ Sikes Orvis doubled in two runs in the third inning, and the Rebels got two more in the fourth to tie the score at 6. Austin Anderson hit a two-run home run in the first inning for the Rebels.

Alabama reliever Thomas Burrows allowed only one hit and struck out four over the last 2 1/3 innings to keep Ole Miss at bay.
