Southern Miss takes series from Florida Atlantic

Another weekend, another series win for Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning Saturday, and went on to beat Florida Atlantic 5-2. It was Southern Miss’ fourth consecutive win, its eighth in 10 games, and secured a third straight series victory in conference play.

The Golden Eagles (15-12, 6-2 Conference USA) can complete the sweep by winning today’s finale.

Connor Barron, Matt Durst, Tim Lynch and Michael Sterling all had two hits for the Golden Eagles. Sterling’s RBI single in the sixth inning put them ahead for good, 3-2. Lynch followed with another RBI single. Breck Kline had brought in the first run of the inning with a single to tie the score at 2.

Austin Roussel led off the eighth inning with a base hit and later scored on a passed ball to give USM an insurance run.

Conor Fisk (2-1) allowed two runs over six innings to earn the win. He gave up eight hits and two walks, and struck out two. Jake Winston pitched the last 2 2/3 innings for his first save of the season.

Brendon Sanger went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Florida Atlantic (14-12, 3-8).
