JA 6th annual golf tournament Friday

A “hole” lot of swinging and dancing is scheduled for Friday — with the intent to help children, youth and families of Warren County.

The sixth annual Birdie, Bogey & Boogie fundraiser is sponsored by the Junior Auxiliary of Vicksburg and will tee off at 1 p.m., said Holly Porter, the JAV chairman for the event.

“The golf tournament is a four-person scramble,” she said, and is at capacity with 36 teams participating in the golf tournament at Vicksburg Country Club. Lunch will follow at 11 a.m.

Following the golf tournament, a Barbecue, Burgers and Boogie party will run from 6 to 10 p.m.

“This is part of the fundraiser,” Porter said, “and you don’t have to have participated in the golf tournament to attend.”

Admission to the party is $20 per person and will include entertainment by Legal Tender with Deanna Nicole, a raffle and a silent auction featuring donations from local businesses.

Friday’s fundraiser is one of three large events the organization hosts that raise more than $15,000, said Porter.

“We also sponsor the Shopping Extravaganza with Outlets at Vicksburg and we partner with the Hinds Community College culinary students to hold a charity lunch.

Money raised Friday goes toward nine community projects JAV sponsors.

That includes Camp Silvercloud, the group’s longest running project, said Porter.

“This is a summer camp offered for mentally and physically challenged children,” she said.

To help promote literacy and the love of reading, JAV also has a project called READ.

“Members will go to classrooms and read to children and a copy of the book is also sent home with the child.”

Other projects the organization sponsors include LEAPS — Learn to Eat and Play Safely — which is designed to teach nutrition, fitness and safety while promoting a healthy lifestyle, Community Outreach assists families in times of emergency situations, INK, a pen-pal relationship between a JAV member and fourth grader aims to provide a continuous mentoring relationship while also attempting to enhance the students writing and language skills, JAV Cares, which Porter said provides children’s activities, resources, education and support during illness that require overnight stays in the hospital and members volunteer at the Exchange Club of Vicksburg Child and Parent Center mentoring students referred by the CAP center.

Food for Friday’s party will be donated by Goldie’s Express, T-Beaux’s, Rowdy’s ROCA Southern Sisters and Milo’s, Porter said.

Terri Frazier was born in Cleveland. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Vicksburg. She is a part-time reporter at The Vicksburg Post and is the editor of the Vicksburg Living Magazine, which has been awarded First Place by the Mississippi Press Association. She has also been the recipient of a First Place award in the MPA’s Better Newspaper Contest’s editorial division for the “Best Feature Story.”

Terri graduated from Warren Central High School and Mississippi State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations.

Prior to coming to work at The Post a little more than 10 years ago, she did some freelancing at the Jackson Free Press. But for most of her life, she enjoyed being a full-time stay at home mom.

Terri is a member of the Crawford Street United Methodist Church. She is a lifetime member of the Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary and is a past member of the Sampler Antique Club and Town and Country Garden Club. She is married to Dr. Walter Frazier.

“From staying informed with local governmental issues to hearing the stories of its people, a hometown newspaper is vital to a community. I have felt privileged to be part of a dedicated team at The Post throughout my tenure and hope that with theirs and with local support, I will be able to continue to grow and hone in on my skills as I help share the stories in Vicksburg. When asked what I like most about my job, my answer is always ‘the people.’
