After 13 long innings of baseball, Ole Miss decided to walk off.

Austin Anderson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 13th inning Friday night to give Ole Miss a dramatic 8-5 victory in the series opener against Auburn.

The winning rally came long after the Rebels (23-8, 4-6 Southeastern Conference) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to send it to extra innings.

Auburn (19-12, 5-5) lost for the third time in four games.

Anderson finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The teams will finish the series today with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Swayze Field in Oxford. The third game of the series, originally scheduled for Sunday, was rescheduled as the back half of the doubleheader to avoid rain that is forecast to last throughout the day Sunday.

Middle Tennessee 13, Southern Miss 1

Southern Miss (17-14, 6-4 Conference USA) gave up season-highs for runs and hits as it was drubbed by Middle Tennessee (14-15, 8-5) in the opener of a three-game series in Hattiesburg.

Middle Tennessee finished the game with 17 hits. Austin Bryant and Jake Ellison had three apiece. Bryant was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Ellison doubled twice and scored three runs.

The loss snapped Southern Miss’ two-game winning streak, and was just its fourth defeat in the last 14 games.

MTSU starter Zac Curtis (4-1) pitched a complete game. He scattered nine hits and struck out 11.

Nick Dawson had two of Southern Miss’ nine hits.

Because of heavy rain forecast for Sunday, the series will conclude with a doubleheader today. Game one is at 11 a.m. at Pete Taylor Park, with game two following immediately afterward.
