Another strong pitching performance halted Mississippi State’s Southeastern Conference series winning streak.

LSU’s Jared Poché allowed three hits and one run over six innings to outduel Ross Mitchell, and the Tigers made a pair of sixth-inning runs stand up as they beat Mississippi State 2-1 Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

LSU (23-8-1, 5-5-1 SEC) has taken the first two games of the three-game set to win the series. Mississippi State (20-12, 6-5) had won its first three SEC series.

The teams play the finale today at 1 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.

Poché (6-2) struck out six batters and walked two. He gave up a run in the fourth inning when Blake Pirtle walked and scored on a single by Demarcus Henderson.

Mitchell also went six innings. He allowed five hits and only walked one batter, but gave up both runs in the sixth inning.

Kade Scivique tied the game with an RBI single, and Chris Chinea brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

Ole Miss 6-5, Auburn 0-1

Ole Miss made its brief losing streak a distant memory with a pair of dominant pitching performances and a series sweep of Auburn (19-14, 5-7 SEC).

Christian Trent scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked only two in leading Ole Miss to a 6-0 win over Auburn in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Oxford.

Will Allen drove in two runs for the Rebels (24-8, 6-5), and Errol Robinson was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

In game two, Sam Smith allowed one run and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings as the Rebels finished the sweep with a 5-1 victory.

Four relievers finished off the win. Josh Laxer struck out four batters while working the last two innings to earn his fourth save of the season.

Sikes Orvis and Auston Bousfield drove in two runs apiece for Ole Miss, which has now won four in a row after a four-game losing streak that included a series sweep last weekend at Alabama.

Southern Miss 7-7, Middle Tennessee 0-6

Matt Durst homered to back a strong pitching performance by Conor Fisk, and Southern Miss beat Middle Tennessee 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Hattiesburg.

Fisk (3-1) struck out 11 batters over seven innings. He gave up five hits and four walks.

In game two, Connor Barron singled in the tying run in the sixth inning, then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as the Golden Eagles rallied for a 7-6 win.

The sweep gave Southern Miss (19-14, 8-4 Conference USA) its fourth consecutive series victory in league play.

“I can’t be more proud of our club and the way our guys came out today,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “It is hard to win a doubleheader in Division I baseball and it’s so easy to get content after winning the first game.”
