The twin parking garages across Mulberry Street from the former Grand Station Casino and Hotel site have been transferred to the city, Warren County land records show.

Used for years as auxiliary parking for downtown shoppers and for events, such as the annual Fourth of July festivities, the 1.3 acres of property has several possibilities for future development, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said when reached Friday.

“We might be able to work out a lease agreement with the hotel,” Flaggs said. “It also would be an excellent place for the Mississippi River Commission to build an office.”

Flaggs didn’t rule out donating the two lots to the commission if any move got underway to move its offices from the historic building it’s occupied on Walnut Street for decades. The historic, red-brick structure was built in 1894 and also houses the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division.

The transfer of the parking garages resulted from the terms of Vicksburg Hotel LLC’s purchase of the 117-room, two story hotel that served the casino from its completion in 1993 as Harrah’s through its 2012 closure and subsequent bankruptcy. The sale price was not disclosed in the transfer deed. The main casino was hauled away for scrap last April after it went to auction.

The Biloxi-based company purchased the casino in July 2013 from former owners Great Southern Investment Group Inc. as part of a deal to close out the casino-hotel’s bankruptcy proceedings. In March, a federal judge threw out most of a protest suit filed by minor investors in the casino and extended the time major investors had to support their own motions to dismiss the case entirely.
