Lady Flashes win region crown

The St. Aloysius girls golf team braved the rain Monday and brought home a region championship.

St. Al’s three-man roster of Anna Fletcher, Laura Phillips and Beth Newman shot 143 as a team to best five other squads and win the Region 5, Class I tournament at Brookhaven Country Club.

St. Al’s great team finish was spurred by its top two players, Fletcher and Phillips, who were also the top two players in the tournament. Fletcher shot a 71 on Monday to take medalist honors, while Phillips was second with a 72. Newman carded a 99.

St. Al beat runner-up Cathedral by 40 shots. The top two teams in the region tournament advanced to the Class I state tournament — which encompasses Classes 1A and 2A — April 28-29 at Clear Creek Golf Course.

The Class III girls tournament for schools in Class 5A and 6A will also be at Clear Creek April 28-29. The Class 1A boys tournament will follow at Clear Creek on April 30 and May 1.
